To see firsthand how cotton growing remains so competitive was the quest for 17 ‘Women in Sugar’ from Queensland’s Wide Bay Burnett region who recently visited Narrabri, NSW. They had discussions with cotton researchers and with the local Women in Cotton group and witnessed numerous cotton farming practices they could incorporate into sugar production.
The trip was partially funded by a Sugar Research & Development Corporation grant – a positive grassroots effort though the press reported Mackay-based Federal Minister De-Anne Kelly as saying money marked for diversification is being frittered away. Deputy Prime Minister John Anderson on the other hand says the reform process is in its early stages.
