The fact that no Aborigines have permanent jobs in Lismore’s central business district has led to a campaign to get jobs. Other councils are enquiring about the initiative.
Eighty-four businesses have been surveyed to find out why many do not ofer Aborigines jobs and what incentives can be used to encourage employment.
Leanne Draper, Lismore’s Vocational Pathways Coordinator, says she has been very impressed with the response from people wanting to support the strategy. The plan has had a lot of media coverage and people from many different areas throughout regional Australia have been in contact with Lismore City Council.
