After a lot of hard work by a lot of people, the new Pomberuk Cultural Centre, at the old pumphouse in Murray Bridge SA, opened in August 2005. Since buying the land – very significant to the Ngarrindjeri people – in 2002, the Indigenous Land Corporation (ILC) has supported the tourism development.
ILC Chairperson Shirley McPherson says it achieves important cultural benefits and creates a fantastic opportunity lor local Aboriginal to participate in the tourism industry.
Through a partnership with local business Cottage Box Chocolates, the first floor of the Pumphouse has been transformed into the Pomberuk Bush Tucker Bistro and Gift Gallery. Cottage Box will manage the area working closely with local Aboriginal people to ensure a strong focus on bush tucker food and unique bush chocolates. In the pipeline for the future is:
1)an on site chocolate factory with visitor viewing facilities; and
2)development of an outdoor stage area for traditional dance performances.
