Yarram’s Community Learning Centre targets students struggling with the mainstream system. Eight teenage boys agree the program is ‘great’, that the members of the Men’s Shed are ‘awesome’. The Mentoring Program was runner-up in the Innovation in ACE category of Adult Learners Week 2005 Awards.

The four Men’s Shed members have taught the boys to build ‘everything from a coffee table to a hovercraft’ as well as budgeting – part of the program involves the teenagers shopping for and preparing lunch for the whole group every Friday. As well as woodwork, technical skills and general ‘life skills’ the men say the boys now have a different perspective on life and that they have ‘learnt respect’.
