Wineries with excess stock are being urged to look at the possibility of turning the wine into ethanol. More than half a billion litres of substandard wine is being held across Australia and 10 litres of wine could produce one litre of ethanol is the claim.
Sunraysia ACC Chairman Don Carrazza says state and federal governments would need to support the proposal. “It’s being done in Europe so it’s not a problem because wine turns into spirits and spirits turns into ethanol…it’s the cost factor that’s probably an issue. The government can certainly afford support the industry because they’ve had a huge benefit from the industry in the last 10 or 15 years” he said.
