NT prisoners will make traps to ‘give something back’
Have you seen the ABC News Online reports about thousands of toads being killed by Humpty Doo, Palmerston and Howard Springs people as the toad front approaches Darwin? NT Frogwatch says the frontline is not really recognisable at the moment, certainly not as much as it was in the bush. The numbers are far less than they were as the ‘Toadbusters’ campaign has really thinned them out.
NT Corrections and Frogwatch have called for donations for tools so prisoners can build ‘supertraps’ as a low cost defence line for Darwin. They will start with 6 to 8 inmates and increase numbers as more tools become available. The traps will be set at Berrimah, Leanyer, Rapid Creek and in the Territory’s National Parks.
Frogwatch’s Graeme Sawyer says the most recent research work shows the large yellow spotted goanna species is rapidly disappearing from the Top End, killed off by the arrival of the cane toad.
PWF would love to hear some firsthand accounts from our NT readers???
