Lateral business thinking addresses specialist shortage
A PWF reader has alerted us to a practical solution to the current shortage of specialist doctors in country Victoria.
A Melbourne company, Regional Health Solutions, has launched a flying doctor service and is operating flights from Essendon Airport to enable Melbourne medical specialists to treat patients in remote locations.
The flights commenced late July when a specialist doctor flew to Bairnsdale Hospital for the day.
The company director, Robert Luzza, says ongoing funding for the service is being sought from the federal and state governments.
“We organise transport through business aircraft for them to be flown in at the start of the day and then we fly them back at the end of the day which means the Melbourne-based health practitioners can work in places like Bairnsdale for eight to nine hours during the day and still be home in time at the end of the day for dinner with their family,” he said.
