Calling other Grey Nomads with skills…are you in a similar situation to Mike? If so, do get in touch.
Mike has emailed PWF:
“I was searching for outback jobs and on page 7 via google and I discovered your site. I hadn’t thought of nomad jobs.
What prompted me was a client had called for me to change his water filter and whilst I was doing that he told me of his previous year’s adventure. John is a 65 year old retired dentist and his wife (55yo), retired solicitor, had purchased a 4×4 and caravan and had been travelling West Aust for the past year doing part time work in their respective professions. They are heading back shortly, having left their vehicle in WA ready for further travel.
All of this made me think along the same line as I had intended travelling through SA, WA, NT possibly commencing June 09 and thought that some work along the way would pay some expenses. I have a 4×4 motor home and would be travelling with my wife.
I am 62 years of age and own a plumbing business and a water pump installation/ repair business just up the road from you in the Yarra Valley. I am a licensed plumber qualified in gas fitting, roofing, stormwater, sanitary, water supply, draining, gas fitting and servicing, gas fitting to caravans, hydrants and hose reels, irrigation, hot water, solid fuel heating, duct fixing, refrigeration and air conditioning, split system air con and all mechanical services relating to the above endorsements.
I have also a limited electrical license to work on hot water, heating, gas appliances and pumps, both single and triple phase. I am licensed to operate excavators, dozers and front end loaders of unlimited size. I am very impressed with your site and would be interested in the progress of the nomad job endeavour.
Best wishes from up the road – Mike Haines”
Wonderful idea! We would love to have grey nomads come to our place in the future for many reasons. Perhaps some of the nomads would just like to have the rural experience on a property with some barter trade involved. We would enjoy their company and travel tales as well! Waiting with great interest.
Pastor Liz Howland who came up with this idea is still outback, but letters like this are forwarded to her and when she returns – shortly I believe – we’ll post more info.

Mike and other travellers considering a working holiday might find the “Work Connections” page @ http://www.noboundaries.com.au useful.
Safe travels

If you are travelling, with skills and looking for casual work on the way, then make up a sign advising what work you do and put it on the side of your vehicle. add mobile number and/or radio, etc.
There are plenty of people already doing similar already.
People out there on the road are starting to ring in about work in response to Liz’s ads – which she has placed in Post Offices and other likely places(!).
I realise these travellers do not usually have email so if you can work out a dot point summary of how you can help and where you are or likely to be, please call 0408 514380 with this info and I’ll forward it info to Liz who will get back to you about jobs and geography….
Safe travelling!
Hi , work opportunities exist on our large scale aquaculture project just outside Darwin in the NT. Jobs inc general farm work and inside our fish processing facility. Would suit couples with own van etc . excellent van parks and tourist facilities nearby. Regards John Jordan admin@wildriver.com.au
We are holding a workshop near Brisbane in June 09 which details how working travellers may be able to claim their expences against thier tax. If anyone is interested in attending, please email me kymnlyn@noboundaries.com.au
