Frankie MacLennan, Engagement & Partnerships Project Leader with Victoria’s Department of Sustainability and Environment has sent out the following advice.
The Department is compiling a list of ‘external’ Community Engagement Practitioner so that staff can have access to a range of engagement services to help in their project work.
There is a focus on:
Work varies from engaging partners in policy development to engaging regional and rural communities in local projects. For example DSE has just conducted a series of workshops with stakeholders interested in the development of a Land and Biodiversity Policy.
The list would ideally include practitioners who are available for large as well as smaller projects and would include a geographic spread across the state.
This is not a formal tender process to build a list of ‘preferred providers’. The Engagement and Partnerships Team will manage the list and provide profiles to staff on request. The list will be dynamic and accessible for staff. The profile is a one page template which describes experience and specialist expertise, along with referees.
If you would like to be included on this list of external engagement services, please contact Rowena Myers who will send you the information: rowena.myers@dse.vic.gov.au and please feel free to forward this opportunity on to others who may be interested.
Sounds like a good idea – people ‘at the coal face’ know heaps! Are other states/departments doing this I wonder?

I am very interested in the concept of compiling a list of those who may be able to make some contribution to collaborative community initiatives, and will write to the DSE to find out more.
I applaud the initiative taken as a starting point in endeavouring to identify community partners with an interest in a more democratic and collaborative approach to addressing policy issues of concern.
The time for a new form of participation in policy matters is here and now.
Please keep me directly informed, even if I do not fit the eligibility criteria for formal input.
I am already actively involved in the Gov2 initiatives in setting up informal online dialogue options and have registered with Pigs will Fly as an interested stakeholder to be kept informed of their initiatives.
At the very least and subject to time availability I should be able to offer online support for those matters that concern me and that are of local or national importance as news ways of addressing public policy initiatives are considered.
In principle I support the Victorian Governments move to look for sustainability options through community engagement.
I hope that other States will follow.
Please take this as a request to have me name included on any list that aims to keep the public informed.

Thank you for your comments Madeleine – it’s important to keep a open, well-intentioned and hopefully well-informed dialogue going isn’t it?
