‘Do Something‘ research reports that we throw out AT LEAST $5.2 billion worth of food from home every year.

WHAT Are We Doing?

Fruit and vegetables are tossed out most, then unfinished restaurant and takeaway meals and then fresh meat and fish!

It seems singles living alone, buying over-sized items and territorial flatmates refusing to share their fridge’s contents are the biggest offenders.

Wealthy households are more likely to dump food.

We are harming the environment as the millions of tonnes of waste food is left rotting in landfill giving off methane gas.

Some retailers encourage waste through two-for-one deals and clever store designs for impulse buys

Our annual waste would equal 150,000 truck loads of garbage and a recent survey has shown the dollars wasted are more than the Australian Army budget.

How Can We Reduce Food Ending Up As Rubbish?

  • Think twice about bulk buy discounts
  • Use plastic containers to store leftovers
  • Write and stick to shopping lists
  • Avoid shopping when hungry!
  • Run a government campaign to reduce the problem as incomes rise and household sizes shrink

Fixing this HAS to happen at the grassroots, with a bit of help from others…
