Xris Reardon from Third-Way Theatre tells us this 5 day course, April 7-11 at Borderlands in Hawthorn, Melbourne, will cover the foundations in a Forum Play and the structuring a Forum play:
“Forum Theatre is a form of theatre in which the audience participates in the development of the story. The actors present scenes that show moments of conflict such as work issues, family problems, racism, bullying, etc. and then invites the audience to intervene and enact solutions to the problems presented. The effectiveness and consequences of each intervention are discussed with the audience. This leads to a very useful discussion and examination of different situations from a variety of angles and perspectives. Theatre-forum is a fun and democratic way for a community to creatively solve problems and learn about itself.”
Cardboard Citizens’ is the UK’s only homeless people’s professional theatre company and the leading practitioner of Forum Theatre there. Its annual Hostel Tour is recognised as a model of best practice in using Forum Theatre to empower the hardest-to-reach groups.
The company has regularly worked closely with Augosto Boal, creator of the Theatre of the Oppressed.
Terry O’Leary is Associate Artist with Cardboard Citizens. She met the company at a hostel in East London and is now one of the most experienced Forum Theatre jokers in the world.
She has directed numerous productions including ‘Peckin’ Me Shed’ and ‘The Wall’ and she worked with Formaat Theatre advising them on the development of their homeless people’s theatre project Dunk.
Master classes with Terry O’Leary are part of an ongoing series of Training Workshops in Theatre of the Oppressed techniques and Theatre for living being offered by Third-Way Theatre.
