Happy to pass on info about the inaugural Greensborough Food Swap in Melbourne’s NE, 24 April 2010.
Local Food Connect and ACES Northern Urban Agriculture Project aim to give people the opportunity to come together and swap their excess home grown veggies.
Do you have a pile of silver beet and no tomatoes?
A Food Swap is a low/no cost way of obtaining a variety of fresh, locally grown (often organic) food and meeting like-minded people.
Food Swaps often occur during a short space of time eg from 9 – 10.30 each Saturday morning, in an easily accessible place within the local community, enabling people to connect with each other.
Garden tips, seeds and recipes are often exchanged and friends made.
No money changes hands. It is all about re-distributing excess and keeping the fresh food supply chain as local and low cost as possible.
Date 24 April 2010
Time 9.00 – 10.30am
Where 108 Diamond Creek Road, Greensborough

Natalie and Daryl from Village Futures Food report that a pilot Food Swap was held on 24 April at ACES, St John of God Accord in Greensborough.
It was well attended and there are plans to have this on a regular basis — watch this space for more details!
The Food Swaps at ACES Northern/St John of God Accord/Churinga(all same place) are occuring every four weeks at this stage. Next two are coming up on Saturday 17th July and Saturday 14th August – both 10am till 12. We’re amazed at the variety of fruit and veg, herbs, seeds, seedlings, recipes etc. each time. Big plans to become a weekly, weekday Growers & Eaters market +++ once days get longer. Watch this space.
Love to hear about more starting up.
Thanks for this update Linda – love to hear about more swap venues starting up??
We have just got a Community Produce Swap Day going up here in Innisfail at the Community Support Centre every second Tuesday of the month. Only had 2 so far, but it’s growing fast!
I should have mentioned we are in Far North Queensland! It’s a great idea for us, as much of our food travels BIG miles and is quite expensive especially in summer.
Hi, we are about to celebrate one year of having produce swaps at Drysdale on the Bellarine Peninsula in Victoria. It has been a great success. We have about 60 members and meet on first Saturday of each month from 9-11am. Any left-over produce is “sold” by donation to the general public and funds/food distributed to local food bank. (We have raised over $500) We have also had edible garden tours, practical workshops and guest speakers.Check out our website on http://www.drysdaleharvestbasket.org. Would encourage people in other areas to set up own group and enjoy!
