These remote area Traineeships could be very useful. They recognise the barriers to employment and training faced by young Indigenous people in remote communities. We’d love to hear from any community or group using this service?

The Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR), is investing almost $23 million in Indigenous Remote Service Delivery Traineeships for schools and child care services.

About The Traineeships

The Traineeships will combine practical work with structured training to give participants a nationally recognised qualification and the work experience they need to access employment opportunities in their communities.

Traineeships will also focus on participants gaining qualifications up to an appropriate level to enter higher skilled positions in government service delivery. They aim to:

  • halve the employment gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians within a decade
  • ensure that all Indigenous four years olds in remote communities have access to early childhood education within five years

Group Training Organisations will deliver the Traineeships

PROJECT DATES
1 July 2010 – 30 June 2013

TRAINEESHIPS IN SCHOOLS

Schools in Remote Service Delivery locations (Queensland, Northern Territory, South Australia, Western Australia and New South Wales) and non-government schools in remote areas will be eligible to host a trainee.

Trainees can fulfil any role required by the school, but the majority will be in education support, administration and grounds-keeping. Qualifications can be at the Certificate I+II, II, III or IV or Diploma level.

TRAINEESHIPS IN INDIGENOUS CHILD CARE SERVICES

Traineeships in child care services will be targeted at centre-based Indigenous funded child care services in Remote Service Delivery locations and Children and Family locations in the Northern Territory, Queensland, Western Australia and South Australia.

Traineeships will be in essential child care roles only. Qualifications in children’s services can be at the Certificate III or IV or Diploma level.
