Travellers Aid – Medical Difficulties And Well-Placed Help

Whenever someone leaves a Travellers Aid’s office with a ticket in their hand and a problem solved, Travellers’ Aid CEO Jodie Willmer says to Pigs Will Fly:

“What Travellers Aid achieves is the result not just of the extraordinary efforts of staff and volunteers, but also the contribution of all those who provide funding, support, advice, referrals and any other kind of input to the work of Travellers Aid.”

What Does Travellers Aid Do?

Travellers Aid does things like helping:

• a young pregnant couple home
• a blind woman get to and from work each day
• a country family with vision impairment get to and from their medical appointments

The Travellers Aid’s newsletter, tells us the way life is for many, how it helps:

• a young man and his family get home to his father’s funeral
• a woman, badly beaten by her husband, reach a place of safety with friends in Sydney. (After TA first sent her in a taxi to hospital for treatment for a broken rib.)
• a force of volunteers accompany people who are unfamiliar with Melbourne city, or perhaps visiting from a country region, to get to and from their medical appointments without the anxiety of wondering where and how they’ll get there
• children from low income families that cannot afford the huge upfront cost of an annual school travel pass get help with a No Interest Loan so that their children can stay at school and be part of the sporting, community and social opportunities available to their friends

Jodie says the organisation is looking to develop stronger relationships as they strive to reduce travel disadvantage. She says:

“At the heart of any civilised society is its people, and how a society treats its most vulnerable people is a measure of its humanity.”

Travellers Aid is seeking to expand into regional and other areas, and reach out to even more people in need of help, independence and safety.
