The thought that if Simplot Australia closes, NO Australian-grown frozen veggies would be available at all and we would be relying on food grown totally outside Australia, is pretty black. A concerned friend sent the following info with a request to pass it on…
Simplot is the ONLY Australian manufacturer of frozen Australian grown vegetables and its future is shaky. because other well-known Australian brands have moved their plants to New Zealand to capture the Chinese veggie market. Apparently they market via New Zealand to Australian tables (without the food being labelled specifically as Chinese) and Simplot is finding it hard to compete. Landline reviewed the problem last September.
Some of us do love designer labels…premium brand shoes, clothing, well known premium perfumes and handbags. BUT…we also look to buy the cheapest food we can for our children to eat. Does this make sense?
Other countries do not necessarily have Australia’s strict guidelines for growing their vegetables and by buying Australian we can be sure that lethal chemicals that may be used in other countries will not be used on Australian vegetables.
We would be keeping Australians in jobs.
If ever the world became unstable regarding wartime we would not be able to feed ourselves.
We, the customers, should support these Australian brands selling good Australian vegetable products (via Simplot) and BEWARE Chinese-grown vegetables on supermarket shelves branded as a product of New Zealand!!
Simplot Australia sells its Australian grown frozen and canned vegetables under the Birds Eye and Edgell brands. All products that use Australian grown vegetables are clearly identified as Australian grown on the pack.
Let’s think before we buy..
