June 17, 2007Kate Schwager from Wincott is delighted to see cooperation between Greening Australia, the Australian Government and Land & Water Australia, leading to funding for two Biodiversity Field Days.
The field days will be hands-on experience for all those involved and will give an insight into ways to protect and enhance the environment. They have been organised through Wincott with the help of the Queensland Murray Darling Committee, Border Rivers Food and Fibre and the Cotton Catchment Communities Cooperative Research Centre.
The field days will include:
- walks and talks on bird identification
- bird watching tips
- identification of common trees, shrubs and ground layer plants
- guide to collecting specimens for ID
- principles of vegetation and habitat management
- management for healthy flora and fauna communities
- biodiversity assessment and monitoring techniques in water quality and riparian health.
There will be plenty of resources to take home as well as skills learnt from the hands-on sessions and the speakers will cover other topics such as fire as a management tool, weed and pest management, beneficial animals and fish management.
These days are designed for landholders and people studying these topics. Buses will transport people to the site near Goondiwindi and the Mungindi field day will be held close to the river near the town. The day will also include a tasting of bush tucker and barbecue lunch. People will need to respond early as only a small number of people can join the group. It is open to people of all ages but RSVPs are needed for catering purposes.
