World Challenge is a global competition to identify and reward people and groups that bring economic, social and environmental benefits to their local communities. It is run by the BBC World News and Newsweek, and Shell.
BBC presenter and sustainable business adviser with Pricewaterhouse Coopers, Leo Johnson, now runs his ‘Down to Business’ program as a micro site under this umbrella – to provide useful information on how to move from the niche to mainstream business.
Nominations must be submitted through the World Challenge website – theworldchallenge.co.uk – by midnight (GMT) ON Sunday 19 June 2011. The winning project will receive a US$20,000 grant from Shell, while two runners up will each receive US$10,000 to help develop their initiatives.
Two past World Challenge finalists – the Skylink biogas firm in Nairobi in Kenya and the ‘Oro Verde’ jungle green gold co-operative in Colombia have both been struggling. Leo’s task has been to give practical advice on how both operations could turn the corner.
Neither felt their potential was being realised, so Leo teamed up with experts to provide ‘trouble-shooting’ advice. See the first Down to Business program here.
Established in 1999 by eBay’s first president, Jeff Skoll, this Foundation’s mission is to drive large-scale change by investing in, connecting and celebrating social entrepreneurs and other innovators dedicated to solving the world’s most pressing problems.
The Foundation gives $40 million US every year to help social entrepreneurs.
By identifying the people and their organizations already bringing positive change around the world, the Skoll Foundation empowers them to extend their reach, deepen their impact and fundamentally transform society.
