October 13, 2007Rick Roser is an Aboriginal artist from Fortitude Valley, Brisbane. He runs ‘Aboriginal Events Management’, an Aboriginal Culture consultancy and has presented thousands of art and culture workshops to schools, TAFEs and universities. Rick is currently promoting his Aboriginal Art and Culture Resources Kit.
PWF received an email promoting the kit and, very interested, we asked some questions about the business.
What led to you starting your workshops? How long have you been doing these?
From the moment I discovered I fitted that niche.
Have you received any government grants?
No, but many of the groups that employ me get the money from the government.
You have done quite a lot of product development I see from your website. Are you the ideas man? Or have you employed marketing people?
I have to do everything.
Do you have any employees or do you use ‘subcontractors’ when needed?
I do everything.
What obstacles have you had to contend with and how did you overcome these?
- seasonal supply and demand,
- no cashflow in downtimes,
- follow the seasons and save/invest.
Looking back would you have done anything differently?
Mainly making decisions when I was tired or unprepared.
Do you have any advice for small businesspeople starting out?
“If you are not big but cannot be small your army will be destroyed” loosely from the Art of War.
About the Kit
Rick has put some of his artwork and workshop material into a collection on CD-ROM as a cultural resource. Especially suited to teachers and students, either as individuals or groups, there is a comprehensive range of illustrated work sheets and handouts. It provides hands on projects which include the ‘Key Learning Areas’ in school curricula and is in use throughout the country. The kit has:

- achievable hands on projects,
- clipart,
- images and short movies that provide useable information for the general public – reviewed by Library Services Education Qld.

- Cultural Information – Tribal protocol; kinship; trade; games; hunting & gathering; water; culture survival; food; shelter.

- stone axe making,
- ochre painting;
- boomerang throwing & safety advice.
Directions are given on how to use readily available materials plus realistic advice about where to get them from – bush, garden or school grounds – and there are three 5 minute colour movies on the basket and stone axe making and the ochre painting.

Looks like a great resource. What a good idea to teach our Primary School students about the culture and early agricultural achievements of the First Australians. I wonder if this part of the new prescription for history teaching?
