Taronga Park Zoo’s Harbourview Cafe is the first restaurant in Australia to become certified under the MSC’s (Marine Stewardship Council’s) seafood sustainability certification program.
The Harbourview Cafe won the privilege of bearing the MSC’s blue Chain of Custody Ecolabel next to certified seafood products on its menu after the zoo’s catering partner, Compass Group, recently completed the rigorous certification process.
The certification was unveiled as part of the annual Sustainable Seafood Day event run by the MSC.
By working with the MSC the zoo is able to reach the thousands of people who visit the zoo with simple ways they can help.
MSC manager, Patrick Caleo, said the Cafe Harbourview’s certification meant that for the first time in Australia consumers would see the MSC Ecolabel on a restaurant menu.
“The sea’s resources are not infinite and we can help safeguard wild fish stocks if we make some simple choices because Nala needs Fish4Life just like us humans. Just buying MSC certified seafood at Taronga Café Harbourview is contributing.”
WWF–Australia has recently formed partnerships with a number of prominent businesses in the Australian seafood industry. It is hoped this will work towards building a market environment where the majority of seafood products available for purchase have been sustainably sourced and are fully traceable.
Something to look for on menus…
