Ange Newton’s grassroots initiative to bring young city women into the bush for a fun weekend – and to possibly find romance with a love-starved beaut bush bloke – went national in ’07. The project, now supported by Beyond Blue, is running a national campaign to entice communities to hold a beaut blokes weekend. Event coordinator, Sara McDonnell says:
“We want to make this program available to young men and older men throughout Australia…(in) a small rural community with declining population…and an excess of beaut blokes …(aged) 50 to 80.”
‘Ideas lady’ Ange says requests for organised weekends have come from as far as Wave Rock in the country’s far west and Darwin in the far north. There have been a string of engagements, at least 15 weddings and quite a few babies – another will arrive this year!
Beaut Blokes in conjunction with Beyond Blue are developing a ‘how to run a BB Weekend’ manual, so that any Australian communities can ‘do it themselves’.
A Beaut Blokes weekend – APART from being a lot of fun – helps tackle community problems of isolation, declining population, drink driving, farm succession, men’s mental health, lack of skilled people in the community, school shrinkage and the town’s general economy not growing.
