The local contribution to the design, development and construction of the Julanimawau Health Centre at Nguiu is highlighted through its colours and designated men’s and women’s areas. Instead of one consultation room there will now be separate male and female clinics and a baby clinic which will better fit the community’s needs.
There will be bush medicine gardens and help in promoting a healthy lifestyle, and traditional Tiwi artwork produced on Bathurst Island will be on show when the centre officially opens early next year.
At the recent traditional opening ceremony locals showcased the new centre as a place to share good health stories as well as a place to receive treatment.
Marion Scrygmour, the NT Minister for Family and Community Services says the $3.65 million clinic has been jointly funded by the Commonwealth and NT Governments.
