The Bonyeeburra Gathering aims to bring together all traditional dance groups, Elders and leaders of Australia that maintain and identify their mob’s connection to the traditional bunya ceremony of southeast Queensland.
It is widely acknowledged that the common corroborees shared at this ceremony were variances of the famous ‘gurri ninda narmi’.
Musgrave Park Cultural Centre hosts the Musgrave Park Family Fun Day on Friday of NAIDOC week (5-11 July 2009) and plans presenting the first Bonyeeburra Exhibition – Friday 10 July – in conjunction with the Family Fun Day.
The Centre sees this as being the beginning of people coming together to celebrate their ageless culture and heritage, as many but also one mob.
They ask all groups who identify with the concept of the Bonyeeburra Gathering, to talk amongst their own dance groups, artists, Elders and leaders in their community for an expression of interest and support for their mob to showcase their traditional dance group and artworks and to participate in the Elders forum.
As with NAIDOC day all performers would volunteer their time to perform and celebrate with their community. Groups are encouraged to seek funding support from:
• Your Local Community organisations and other sponsors,
• Fundraising activities, Local Council or Other available Grant Funding,
• Alternatively, the Centre can assist you to seek Travel Allowance for your groups to attend, and submit Grant Funding to the Festivals Australia.
