Given recent editorial comments on the Federal Government’s Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) effectively negating State and Local Government and individual efforts and possibly helping the large polluters keep on polluting, I’d be interested in hearing your thoughts on the following from a concerned reader:
“How many saw and took note of the ABC Four Corners program on the Big “C” Monday night the 9th March? If those who did not see the program they should do such by logging into the ABC website.
It presents a despicable gutless picture in high political back down and high polluters power over our weak politicians.
We voted for them to be in power due to what we were falsely led to belief was their high moral backing on significant “C” reduction and the development of new “C” free power sources.
It made an absolute mockery of the Kyoto agreement. A worthless signature on a worthless piece of paper. Pigs will fly indeed as far as Global Warming goes.
When I go bush, my off-road camper is Solar powered which runs fridge, lighting and hi-tech equipment. (I have worked in Solar since the late 60s)
My vehicle has been converted to LPG/Diesel. At home the hot water is Solar, Solar external lighting and Solar powered bore pump.I have planted out well over 50,000 trees on various properties with a 96% survival rate without the use of those boastful, glittering plastic tree condoms. I have signed the electronic petition, “Help Rudd choose a Solar Future.”
To go Solar electric power is not at all feasible due to ignorant Government and Coal Power regulations regarding Tariffs. The CFCs position is a mess.
What we do see blasted on the “box” are black balloons floating out of houses. (Blame the public for Global Warming). None float up from all those sporting venues held at night.
Wow, a hybrid electric car supported by the tax payer. Plug it in for a recharge, shovel in more Coal at Yallourn boys. A vehicle that is already a failed dinosaur that no other nations wants. Forget Honda’s Hydrogen/Electric vehicle. (The production of Hydrogen is at present highly polluting.)
Have none of our politicians heard of Wave Power? Such a simple, non obtrusive design that works 24/7.
Has Hydrogen (“H”) produced from polluted and/or saline infected water become blasphemous? Again a very simple process and once kick started in production, “H” produces “H”, switch off the Coal power.
The potential of employment and technology export in the fields of alternative energy is enormous. It would far outstrip what is employed in the fields of CO2 producing fossil fuels. No way, is the political policy. So what, that our alternative energy brains go off-shore and that we import their products.
After the 4Corners program, I am thoroughly disgusted and wonder if it is worth trying to further reduce my “C” foot print. None of our elected leaders show any concern on Global Warming and profits from holes in the ground going off-shore.
Why should I be concerned? Convince me otherwise.

Hi Hans,
I agree with you, the governments real position on reducing carbon is an absolute disgrace, and in our current policitcal landscape we have minimal chance of making any reductions in carbon pollution in the near future. However what has become clear to me in recent times ( since the Rudd anouncement of the CPRS and its lacking of any ability to reduce carbon pollution) is that action to reduce carbon pollution has to come from the grass roots. The big polluters have too much power over the government at the moment. Eventually they will listen when the community is taking more action than they are – when the community demands it ( much more so than in the 07 election). I have heard annocdotally that there are over 100 community based sustainability groups formed across Australia in the past 2 years and over 1000 in the western world, i am part of my local group which is still in its infancy, but like most of these groups it started because the community is sick of no action from the Government and decided to go it alone and make a local effort using local resources to reduce the communities carbon pollution. Therefore i suggest that if you are not already part of a local group, then get involved and maybe that will assist reduce your disappointment in our political leadership on this matter.
