Chloe’s Castle & Candle BYO Beach Picnic

8 years ago, a newly graduated 22 year old Visual Arts teacher rose to the friendly challenge that ‘no organised fun is free’. Chloe Messner, a keen member of Victoria’s Lorne Surf life Saving Club and its many activities, set out to create a free, fun, artistic, beach activity!

She came up with an event that regularly attracts between 100 and 140 people and, in 2006, notched up its eighth successful year.

What is it?

It is a Castle and Candle Competition and BYO Dinner – a free sand sculpture, with no rules, decorated and/or lit by candles when completed – a very pleasant backdrop to an evening beach picnic. All entrants receive a raffle ticket and lots of prizes donated by local traders are handed out.

Where is it held?

It’s held from 6-9pm at the St George River near Lorne on Victoria’s scenic Great Ocean Road – always a popular spot for families as there is a choice of river or surf play and lovely wide stretches of sand. The tide dictates the date which is always at the end of January whenever the tide is lowest!

How does it run?

Chloe does all the promotion, organises the prizes and runs the event. For the first few years Chloe and the event ‘just happened’, then the Surf Coast Shire Arts Officer suggested organising Public Liability Insurance through the Lorne Community House.

Chloe is into heaps of interesting ‘stuff’.
