Have you taken the plunge & rented out the beloved holiday house?
It’s hard……deciding you need the rent money more than you need your retreat and that wonderful ‘away from it all’ feeling!
Much as she hates to give it up, along with the well-loved walks in the adjacent Angahook State Park, Warrandyte’s Neighbourhood House (WNH) Coordinator, Karen, has made that decision.
I have written before about the appalling government funding arrangements for Neighbourhood Houses in Victoria – unchanged in 12 years – with half of the states’ 360 Houses funded for under 15 hours coordination per week though they provide 40-60 programs each week. Karen is pretty typical – paid for 15 hours coordination, she works a 40 hour week to keep things going….going really well!
Is it the same in every state I wonder? Love to hear what goes on in other states (?) In Victoria the bureaucrats and pollies just don’t seem to ‘get’ what a vital role Neighbourhood Houses play in the community. The battle for realistic funding seems to have been going on forever, though there may be some good news with the state budget being presented tonight? Fingers crossed!
Karen has made the decision, cleaned out her beloved ‘muddie’ at Airey’s Inlet – on Victoria’s Great Ocean Road – and packed all their gear into boxes, so they can easily ‘move in and out’!
