Anti off-shore detention petition signatures now 78,000
In just a week the GetUp petition to stop asylum seekers being detained offshore has risen from 33,000 to 78,000 and the attempt to pass the new legislation, prior to the PM’s visit to Indonesia, failed.
Two weeks ago, GetUp points out, Laurie Oaks was saying anyone who argued against the proposed migration changes to the Senate Inquiry was ‘wasting their time’. Now it’s another story in the media and no longer ‘another rubber stamp for party politics’.
In the next six weeks the dissenting pollies will be under pressure to change their vote when Parliament reconvenes in August. The GetUp blog outlines how a number of the amendments currently on offer to push the new law through fail to address concerns.
GetUp plans to table their petition in Parliament again, continuing support for the politicians from all parties who’ve expressed serious concerns about this law.
