‘Y Space’ to run community workshops and perform with local artists
There are heaps free arts activities as part of Festival Melbourne 2006 across Victoria during the twelve days of the Games. The idea is that local artists will work alongside visiting artists for ‘cultural exchanges’.
Y Space is a performance company from Natimuk – in Victoria’s Wimmera district – that has made a name for spectacular performances in unusual places, including living as angels on the State Theatre Spire in Melbourne and dancing on the side of 33m high silos in Natimuk in Western Victoria.
At dusk ‘Space and Place’ will be performed by aerialists against the backdrop of the enormous PowerWorks dredger in Morwell. The ‘iconic’ dredger will come alive when the huge machine, once used for digging brown coal, will be transformed into a gigantic performance performance stage.
There will be a spectacular aerial performance with live animation, puppetry and shadow sculptures. Original music and a mass choir joined by local musicians and percussion groups will come out of the local community?s own sense of space and place. This will all have been explored through a series of workshops over 10 days with Y Space artists working in collaboration with Latrobe artists and community members.
This major community arts project has been conceived and led by Y Space and supported by Latrobe City Council.
