The Just Add Water project aims to put 200 megalitres into the Hattah Lakes, south of Mildura in Victoria. These lakes are internationally significant for their unique wildlife and in a first for a green group, the ACF (Australian Conservation Foundation), helped by Mecu credit union is entering the water market.
“Places like Hattah, that have a bit of resilience in them, are becoming immensely important as drought refuges..
We’ve lost 90% of the wetlands in the Murray-Darling Basin. The wetlands that remain become increasingly important for the remaining species..
Hopefully they can survive and if conditions improve move out of these regions and recolonise different parts of the river..”
The ACF and Mecu are asking members of the public for a $15 donation and to sign a petition to Minister Penny Wong.
Great to see some action..

Don Henry from the ACF says: “The ‘Just Add Water’ target has been exceeded.
Thanks to a truly incredible response, and the support of credit union mecu limited, we have not only met our campaign target to purchase 200 million litres of water for the Murray-Darling – we’ve exceeded it!
The campaign has been hugely popular with media coverage across newspapers, TV and radio. This, coupled with a drop in the water price, means that we now plan to return an estimated 400 million litres of water to Hattah Lakes – that’s double our initial target!
In just two weeks we have raised enough money to purchase our first 200 million litres of water. We plan to purchase another 200 million litres in April.
This water will provide much-needed relief for native plants and animals, a fantastic result for our environment.
If you’re yet to make a donation of $15 to support this campaign, please visit http://www.justaddwater.org.au today. It’s not too late!
Any extra funds raised over and above our target will help strengthen our campaign work calling on our governments to protect and restore the Murray-Darling.
This buyback is the first step in a major ACF campaign aimed at protecting the Murray-Darling Basin which is under threat from over-extraction of water for irrigation.
Once our water is returned to Hattah Lakes we’ll deliver our petitions to Senator Wong, asking her to commit to a strong Murray-Darling Basin Plan to protect our rivers and wetlands.
With the draft plan due in June, we’re already well into our campaign to show Senator Wong that the solution is clear: Just Add Water…
This campaign is only made possible with the generous support of our donors. To be part of this first-of-its kind initiative, visit http://www.justaddwater.org.au“
