September 7, 2010ONE International is asking people to sign a petition to the IMF (International Monetary Fund) to help Pakistan’s poorest recover from the recent unprecedented floods.
The Scale Of The Disaster
Reports suggest 20 million people have been affected, devastating in a country where 60% of the population was already living below the poverty line.
The IMF Can Help
The IMF is the institution that oversees debt repayments and it is currently considering ways in which Pakistan’s debt can be eased, and how to make sure the money is effectively used to help people affected.
Haiti Poor Helped
Early this year ONE members helped to get Haiti’s debt cancelled after the earthquake.
Similar Help For Pakistan’s Poorest?
Pakistan will need all its available resources to help it recover from this crisis and to fight long-term poverty.
If the IMF agrees to freeze Pakistan’s debt repayments for the next two years this will in effect give them a vital $6 billion to spend on rebuilding.
