Onboard Docklands is a community website, set up collaboratively with Docklands residents and workers. It aims to get people ‘connected’. Residents and workers are being encouraged to start up new groups and activities across the various Docklands precincts – from family activities to dog walking and neighbourhood barbecues.
Right now students from anywhere in Vic. as well as those currently living and studying in Docklands are being invited to a free, party night, to have some fun and share stories of study both here and abroad.
When: Thursday 30 August 2007
Where: Alumbra Shed 9 Central Pier, 161 Harbour Esplanade, Docklands 3008
Time: 7.00pm
Cost: Free and a light supper is provided
RSVP: For catering purposes telephone 9658 8020 or email kara.abakumenko@melbourne.vic.gov.au.
Inner City Councils do seem to be aware of their multi-cultural mix of residents and are making an effort to address difficulties. The intranet is a good communication tool and hopefully will reach out to lonely students or others needing support.
Docklands is Melbourne’s new waterfront, right in the city centre, located to the west of the CBD on Victoria Harbour and 3 km of Yarra River frontage. A combination of residential, commercial, retail and leisure activities, the area is being developed in stages over a 10 – 15 year period.
Onboard Docklands started in October 2005 in time for Christmas festivities and holidays and by May 2006 the site was full swing with all residents and workers being able to use the new password-protected Intranet to post notices, exchange information and find out about local events and activities in their neighbourhood or building. Visitors can also find out Docklands info. In mid 2007, Onboard is attracting around 100 site visitors per day.
