We hear from Shane Strudwick on behalf Victoria’s Murray River tourism community that they have developed and recently launched one of Australia’s first tourism specific mobile phone and devices web site.
Via your mobile phone there is instant information about where to stay and what to do in the whole region – ideal visitor planning.
“With the recent challenges in our region, the Murray River is proud to be on the cutting edge of this new communication and technology…researching a trip like this means you can quickly plan or share the experience with friends as they check it out on their mobile at the same time” says Shane.
Integrated with the existing River Murray web site where content is managed by the community, the mobile site is intentionally designed for viewing on the smaller screens of mobile devices which ensures its bandwith is very small for low cost, yet very fast downloading.
It is designed to work on both new 3G mobile phones and – most importantly – works on the older 2G mobile phones.
Developments in mobile technology are providing additional advertising opportunities for businesses while delivering information and services to visitors.
The site was developed by Design Train, 2008 Small Business of the Year Champion Award-winners for Service.
dotMobi – winner of the Mobile Internet Innovation award at the Irish Internet Association’s Net Visionary Awards in May – provides the critical link between mobile operators, handset manufacturers, content providers/brands and users to make phones the tool of choice for the web mobile.
They are sponsored by a consortium of companies which includes Google, Ericsson, Hutchison, Microsoft, Nokia, Samsung Electronics, Telefonica Moviles, Vodafone etc.

Apparently there are 40 million active mobile web users in the United States alone – and growing!
Currently the Murray River web site attracts over 720,000 visitors per year and the community’s goal is to attract over 1 million visitors online by 2009/2010.
