‘Freedom from Fear’ is the theme for Refugee Week 2009 – 14-20 June and the Fitzroy Learning Network (FLN) in inner Melbourne. FLN is inviting people to help celebrate their refugee clients’ lives here and our aspirations for freedom for all – they’re throwing two parties..
This Neighbourhood House – like many others – welcomes people from diverse backgrounds offering help with English language skills, job interview skills, computer skills and basic life skills.
From 2000-08 FLN was a lead agency in supporting Temporary Protection Visa holders released from Immigration Detention Centres. They have well developed links with other like-minded organisations.
FLN responds to each wave of new arrivals in Melbourne, often being the first port of call for ESL lessons, information, advocacy and support. The most recent group is the African community, particularly those from the Sudan.
FLN has also tapped into the NAB’s Employee Volunteer Program to help with their varied projects.
2nd Year Interior Design students from Melbourne’s Swinburne University have been thinking creatively for the network and for their hall, clubhouse and courtyard.
On Friday 12 June at 6pm people are invited to visit the students’ exhibition of their design ideas Changing Patterns in Social Space and to join in a BBQ and party. Please RSVP 9417 2897 or email admin@fitzroylearningnetwork.org.au by Wednesday 10 June for catering purposes.
On Tuesday 16 June FLN invites people to one of their spectacular Community Lunches from 12pm with a special BBQ put on by the MFB. Fun and games with FLN clients will follow. Please RSVP 9417 2897 or email admin@fitzroylearningnetwork.org.au by Friday 12 June.
