Tina and Will Visser would like to see PWF post info re: places for grey nomads to volunteer their time in exchange for shelter, power, water for the dry season in the Northern Territory.
For two dry seasons Tina and Will worked as caretakers at O’Keeffe House, Riverbank Drive, Katherine NT, a job they highly recommend.
This year they won’t be doing the caretaking as they have decided to travel overseas to visit family after doing a 5 month house sit job in Albany Creek.
The property belongs to the Northern Territory National Trust and was originally a recreational hut built in 1942 for engineers based in the area during the war.
It was sold to the public after 1945 when it was no longer needed by the army.
Eventually John and Olive O’Keeffe, bought the house. Olive was a quite famous nurse in the NT and was awarded an OBE by the Queen for nursing services.
The O’Keeffe residence is one of the very few WWII structures that has survived to present day.
The couple would be required to show people through the house and tell them a bit of its history, as well as keep it dusted and also do some gardening and maintenance.
A caravan shelter, power and water is made available in return.
Hours of opening will be decided between the couple and the lady in charge, Gillian Banks. This can be for just one season May-September or can be a full time caretaking job.
Tina and Will say:
“If you contact Gillian Banks she will be able to give you more details should you need them, but basically its a volunteer job for a couple who must like chatting to people and we did get people from all over the world there, It’s such fun.
The property is wonderful.”

Any other ideas for exchanging shelter, power, water in the NT dry?
