Working in partnership with Tanya Ha – author, TV presenter, enviro champion and mother of two – Melbourne’s Hobson’s Bay City Council recently developed and ran a series of 8 ‘Mama Green’ workshops to teach Mums – and Dads – and their children about sustainable living in bayside Williamstown.
Tanya, author of Greeniology and upcoming Greenstuff (for kids), is best known as the Eco Coach in the award-winning SBS reality TV series Eco House Challenge.
Tanya is a ‘people’s environmentalist’, a passionate advocate for the ways that ordinary people can help save the planet.
Mama Green was an eight-week environment workshop series that focussed on environmental sustainability in the home, with a particular emphasis on issues relevant to new parents.
The workshops were designed in conjunction with the Council’s City Strategy Department to give parents the opportunity to learn about saving energy, reducing emissions, saving water, making their homes healthier, and sustainable consumption in a child-friendly environment.
Mama Green aimed at mothers with children aged up to five, but fathers were welcome to attend the sessions too.
Child care was provided but children could remain with their parents in the workshop.
To their credit local government organisations are doing all sorts of interesting and worthwhile stuff ‘at the coal face’.
