The first ever free open day in 36 Victorian public galleries
This inaugural event is being coordinated by the Public Galleries Association of Victoria with major funding support from Arts Victoria.
On Sunday 29 October this very creative event idea will include:
- workshops for adults and children;
-
guided walks through sculpture parks and galleries;
- talks by artists and curators;
-
performances;
-
story telling;
-
lectures on a wide variety of subjects;
- food and wine tastings;
- (in some areas) subsidised transport to enable people to travel from outlying areas.
More specifically:
- Horsham Regional Art Gallery will stage a performance by the Wimmera Women’s Circus;
- The City Museum at Old Treasury will hold millinery demonstrations;
- Maroondah Art Gallery will feature an African choir and workshop based on an African textiles exhibition;
- At Hamilton Art Gallery there will be model-making in association with artist Callum Morton’s exhibition ‘Tomorrow Land’;
- At the Monash Gallery of Art enjoy Angel Day, inspired by Emmanual Santos’ photographic exhibition of angels and biblical visions including a Capella performance and other angel themed events;
- Geelong Gallery will have regional food and wine tasting;
- Shepparton Art Gallery will present Melbourne stencil artists to speak and run workshops;
- Textiles are one of the main features of the Ararat Regional Art Gallery;

Sculpture is a speciality of McClelland Gallery + Sculpture Park;
- Major Australian art works of the late 1800s are the key attraction at the Castlemaine Art Gallery and Historical Museum.
