A Handbook developed to deal with crises
Tourism is especially vulnerable to natural and man-made disasters and events which makes the implementation of a ‘timely communications response’ crucial.
Worldwide and local experience shows that the absence of an effective, tourism-focused communications response following a crisis or incident can be devastating to local businesses, towns and regions.
With Victoria well and truly into what looks like being the most horrendous fire season, Tourism Victoria has advised people to get a copy of their ‘Crisis Communications Handbook (pdf) for Regional and Local Tourism’.
The handbook was prepared by communications specialists, Gavin Anderson & Co. and is designed to counter negative publicity in the event of a crisis. It was adopted widely and with ‘great effectiveness’ during the 2006 Grampians and Gippsland bushfires and there is ongoing work exploring ways to enhance the handbook and its associated activities.
