It seems in a ‘can do community’ pigs will fly in circles…..True or False?
TRUE!
So what’s all this about?
In 2002-3, when the Pigs Will Fly project was a few vague ideas, it went under the name ‘Can Do Community’ – to the extent that the business name and domain name were both registered.
Why did we drop the name? At the time there was the possibility of confusion between our project and a FACs Can Do Community Award program. It seems this program has now ended and the department is now (FACSIA) the Dept for Family, Community Services & Indigenous Affairs .
Loving & hating ‘Pigs Will Fly’
People either love or hate the name and marketing people say sure it’s memorable but it doesn’t SAY what the project IS! True, and you do get tired of having to explain things time after time.
WHAT IS OUR GOAL? WHO DO WE WANT TO REACH?
We want to reach grassroots people and establish a network right around OZ, sharing community and business info – what works, what doesn’t, inspirational stories, ‘how to’ info etc so people can balance the ‘triple bottom line’ ie go for business success and jobs…sure… BUT not at the expense of our natural and cultural heritage, meaning we take care we pass on the good things about life today to our kids.
QUESTION: Will a more straightforward name be more effective in getting the idea ‘out there’ and building the network?
We’d love some feedback on completing the circle & changing the name!

I love the name 🙂 It’s catchy and people want to know what it is all about – it is also memorable.
It’s also a play on the when pigs fly comment that says that things are impossible. Pigs WILL Fly says that it’s not impossible and you are sharing those stories.
I like the ‘Pigs Will Fly’ name, but maybe a more descriptive name like ‘Can Do Community’ would attract more people to the site.
Hi, I just love the name! Says a lot, means a lot. It has good curiosity value, and draws readers to find out what it’s all about. Yep, love it or hate it. I love it.
I think Pigs Will Fly sounds negative – as though it will never happen. I think “Can Do Community” sounds a lot more positive (and inspirational).
Hi,
Love it, is very catchy and made me courious; however I think a more descriptive name could capture those less creative/lateral thinking people.
I think “Can Do Community” sounds a lot better and will have a greater impact on community and business issues
I really like the existing name – I think half the fun of an interesting name is that it draws people in and gives you a chance to explain what you do.
“Can Do Community” doesn’t really tell me much more than “Pigs Will Fly”, so you may as well go with the name that gets people talking!
Anyway, I like the positive feel that “Pigs Will Fly” has, it makes you believe that anything is possible, and that’s a great thing for people to hold on to!
I like the existing name – catchy and quirky – and it implies a positive attitude in my opinion. But true, the words don’t reflect what it ‘is’. Can Do Community is fine as a descriptive name, but doesn’t inspire me personally – doesn’t stand out. I like memorable names/brands! Can’t you have both? Pigs Will Fly – The Can Do Community.
love it! it is why I read the emails….don’t let the pig fly out with the bathwater…soryy baby go out with the bathwater!!!!
Pigs Will Fly suits me fine; I also like The Can Do Community. So, how about using both names. Brad has my vote: Pigs Will Fly – The Can Do Community.
Hi “Pigs will fly” sounds to me like it will give hope to the country community that goods things can happen, is a pig flying a good thing? dpends where you are standing. Explaining that this newsletter is about a CAN DO Community becomes obvious on reading please dont change the name, great titles are hard to come by!
I have a flying pig in my living room to remind me that the impossible happens.
That you have to explain it is a positive as it give you the opportunity to talk about it.
I will never forget the flying pig at the airport in Ireland and for anyone who has flown Ryan Air they know the impossible happens.
The can do communities sounds very positive and it makes one want to live there
With so much negativity around the can do communities is positive
I am not one for “Can Do’. Not strong enough for your mission objectives.
Why not something like “Making it happen for Regional Australia”. Which is what you are doing. Regards, Marc.
I love the audacity of “Pigs Will Fly”. To me it is indicative that things can be accomplished despite the negativity and opposition sometimes encountered in any action worth taking. Keep the name.
I’ve scanned 12 months or so of the http://www.pigswillfly.com.au archived articles and read all of the content in the ‘About Pigs Will Fly’ section of the website. The range of article that are posted are extremely diverse, but underneath it all the common theme seems to be that the website functions as a very broad Australia-wide community notice-board – certainly not limited solely to the bush or Regional Australia. I maintain a few blog sites (the main one is http://ochrearchives.blogspot.com) myself and know how difficult it can be to limit the range of topics within a certain band.
Pigs Will Fly as a name is certainly catchy and somewhat curious. When I receive the regular newsletters it usually takes me a while to recall what the likely content is going to be. It is because of this that a name change might be warranted. On the other hand, having spent 25 years in the corporate world it’s been my experience that whenever an organisation suggests changes to its name, tag lines, logos and other branding it can mean that it is an excuse to divert attention from something within the place that is not working. I will say that Gail Plowman and her article contributors do a great job in that there are always at least one or two items in each Newsletter that I read in detail.
Over the past year of so I’ve been a member of a loosely formed unofficial group called the Kachana Advocates Network (KAN) which aims to replicate throughout Australia the amazing soil and vegetation regeneration work being carried out by Chris and Jacqui Henggeler and Danny and Regula Waser on their 700 + square km property called Kachana (www.kachana.com) in the Kimberley. We are seeking funding to establish trial plots on properties all around Australia where high density short duration grazing strategies are used to improve soil health. We’ve coined the phrase, the KAN-DO Plots with this as our goal. Our project, coupled with the fact that the term “Can Do Community” does not tell the reader much, makes me disinclined to support the Pigs Will Fly name being changed to the Can Do Community.
Given all of the above, I thought a name like http://www.noticeboard.com.au might be pretty neat, but a search reveals that someone else has registered this domain name already. What seems to be available and might work is http://www.aussienoticeboard.com.au. Food for thought, anyway!
I like Brad’s idea of combining the two and creating the name ‘Pigs will Fly – the can do community’. I like the originality of the original name and people will get to know what it is about.
I think anyone attracted to Pigs will Fly will quickly be drawn into the spirit of it and become aware of the community aspect. I love the name and enjoy reading the newsletter. The groups I am connected with have certainly benefited from the ideas and the enthusiasm of the projects.
I love the name ‘Pigs will fly’ for all the above reasons. I think leave the name as it is, it works so why mess with it. But if you must change it, I like Brad’s idea of combining the names & building on that what about ‘Pigs will fly – so can communities’.
I always believed that ‘Pigs Will Fly’ was a great title because it was different and had marketing potential. The title always makes me go to that email and read it. I have so much other community material come across my desk that if you were to call it ‘can do community’ it would probably get lost, where as the Pigs always take me forward. I agree with Brad, ‘the can do community’ could be used as a byline to Pigs Will Fly. C’mon the pigs
Thank you Margaret!
Energy has become one of the most significant concerns in the 21st century. The need for energy has continued to increase and it has become difficult to meet this demand. Coal is poised to be one of the most important sources of energy but it is facing the challenge of environmental impact. To ensure that coal becomes an important source of energy in the world, it is important to put in place a framework for sustainable coal mining. The government should play bigger roles in regulation of coal mining and ensure environmental impact assessment is carried out first. The government should shut down mines if they continuously ignore the law. Fines are not sufficient deterrents for coal mines to supply with safety standards and protect the people and the planet.
