September 21, 2005Seven hundred new houses will be built in Lyons, Darwin, due to the relocation of the 1st Aviation Regiment from Queensland to support the Army’s new Tiger reconnaissance helicopters.
A new agreement states that the Lyons Development Corporation will employ Larrakia people and businesses during the construction phase and carry out job training wherever possible, to boost the Territory’s skilled workforce.
Darwin’s Indigenous heritage will be recognised in Lyons with streets and parks being given Larrakia names and public art depicting Larrakia stories.
The Heads of Agreement is between the Lyons Development Corporation, the Larrakia Nation Aboriginal Corporation, Larrakia Development Corporation and the Northern Land Council. A similar agreement was signed two weeks ago for the Darwin Waterfront Project.
